Josiah Koppanyi - Winnipeg Scape [2021]
A love letter to the city rendered in Koppanyi's signature whimsical style, Winnipeg Scape layers downtown's skyline, a rumbling CN freight train, and a packed ballpark diamond into a single sweeping view of the river's edge. Glassy towers rise beside ornate heritage facades in warm terracotta and mustard, while a quiet riverside street of gabled houses and cyclists unfolds in the foreground — the whole scene bathed in a soft dusk gradient of blue fading into pink.
Self-taught and Winnipeg-born, Koppanyi builds his cityscapes intuitively, letting color and pattern guide each stroke rather than working from strict architectural scale. The result is a Winnipeg that feels both instantly recognizable and gently dreamlike — nostalgic, playful, and full of the small human details (bikers, ballplayers, a train conductor) that make a city feel lived-in.
