Josiah Koppanyi - St Boniface [2022]

A vibrant portrait of Winnipeg's French Quarter, this piece brings together St. Boniface's most storied landmarks — its pale cathedral spires, historic city hall, and riverside promenade — with the everyday rhythm of the neighborhood: strollers on the boulevard, café patios, trams, cyclists, and boaters drifting along the river below.

Koppanyi renders the district's mix of heritage architecture and civic monuments in his signature flattened, jewel-toned palette, filling every corner with small human moments — a couple crossing a footbridge, tea service under striped umbrellas, a plane looping overhead. The result is less a straightforward view than a celebration of the neighborhood's character: historic, lively, and unmistakably St. Boniface.
